girl with light in a dark world

The world is a dark place

Yes, this world is dark and gritty with sin, pain, and--right now--diseases like Covid 19. So why would I write stories that are so cheerful and bright?

Because the world may be dark and broken, but I see the light of Christ shining through that. Writers write about the world they see, or the world they believe in. For me, that is a world bright with hope and life.

Christ is the light of the world.

Because of His sacrifice on the cross, there is salvation; and with salvation comes hope.

It's not that I don't acknowledge the problems this world has. As a missionary, I see all around me poverty, sickness, and grief. I've had children beg at my door for food. (Which I gave them.) I've watched grown men hunt for their next meal in a grocery store garbage can.

But there is piercing light that shines brightly through all the poverty and grief and injustice. There is the death of death in the death of Christ. There is the rich wealth of a Heavenly Father who owns the cattle on a thousand hills. There is the righteous, wise justice of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. And one day, there will be no tears, when Christ wipes them all away.

This is why I write hope-filled and light-filled Christian fiction

I write hope-filled Christian fiction to celebrate that.

I think we should all focus on that. Sin is a curse and the world is dark, but there is a balm in Gilead and there is a cure in salvation through Christ alone.

Because of Christ, the world is a bright place.

Because of Christ, our fiction can reflect our sure hope.
